Dr Shonisani Raphalalani

After attaining her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Cape Town in 2007, Dr Shonisani Raphalalani completed her internship at Polokwane-Mankweng Complex in 2009. Thereafter, Dr Raphalalani served community service at Polokwane Karee Base Military sickbay. After her experience working as Medical Officer in the Psychiatry Department at Mokopane Hospital and Thabamoopo Psychiatric Hospital, she decided to pursue her speciality in psychiatry.

Dr Raphalalani obtained a Diploma in Mental Health and then chose to specialise in Psychiatry through the University of Pretoria at Weskoppies Hospital. She completed her Fellowship in Psychiatry (Fc Psych) through the College of Medicine of South Africa and attained her Masters in Psychiatry (MMed Psych) from The University of Pretoria. One of her many accomplishments is an award for her thesis research in a clinical category.

Dr Raphalalani has an innate love for psychiatry, which allows her to interact with her patients and understand where they come from. She utilises various forms of therapy and works alongside a multidisciplinary team of specialists to provide holistic care to her patients. Through therapy, patients learn to adapt to their surroundings using appropriate coping strategies. In today’s fast-paced world, people don’t have the time to pause and reflect on their experiences which is why psychiatry provides a safe space for people to open up and rediscover who they are.

Additionally, Dr Raphalalani gives mental health talks on several platforms to eradicate the stigma of mental illness. In her spare time, she enjoys painting and taking long walks.
