Psychological Trauma
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO EXPERIENCE TRAUMA?
Trauma is the aftermath of a tragic event such as an assault, rape, injury or car accident. Dealing with such an experience causes much distress and takes a toll on your emotional state and frame of mind. When something terrible occurs in your life, it takes time to heal completely. However, with enough support and self-help strategies, your life can get back on track, and you can initiate the process of healing.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF TRAUMA?
Trauma symptoms can span a few days or months. The time it takes to recover depends on your situation and how you are handling it.
Symptoms of trauma are:
- The onset of denial or shock
- Trouble concentrating
- Fear
- Anxiousness
- Withdrawal
- Hopelessness or sadness
- Feeling tired all the time
- Muscle aches and pain
- Mood swings
WHAT CAUSES TRAUMA?
Trauma arises from an injury, debilitating condition such as an assault, rape or violent animal attack. Also, living in a dangerous neighbourhood or experiencing abuse, bullying, neglect, and domestic violence can cause trauma.
WHEN DO YOU NEED TO SEE A PSYCHIATRIST?
When specific triggers of a past traumatic event set off a dangerous pattern of behaviour, it is time to see a psychiatrist. Also, being stuck in a situation stunts healing, and of course, post-traumatic stress may occur.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a dangerous condition whereby your nervous system remains in a state of shock, and you cannot process emotions efficiently.
HOW DO YOU TREAT TRAUMA?
Practising healthy mindfulness, getting enough exercise and socially engaging with others are remedies for trauma. In addition, regulate your nervous system regularly by taking 60 deep breaths, focusing on exhaling. Your psychiatrist will help you deal with the trauma by teaching you self-help strategies and prescribing medication to deal with the tangible symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
